UK Budget 2026: £6m funding will help develop SEC 'for next generation'

The £6m funding is part of the UK Government’s Budget announcement

Plans to create a new outdoor venue and an indoor arena designed for immersive performances on the banks of the Clyde have come a step closer after the UK Government said it would provide £6 million as part of its Budget.

Proposals for Destination SEC, which would see the 64 acre Scottish Event Campus (SEC) site which currently houses the OVO Hydro, the SEC Centre and the SEC Armadillo, developed further, were unveiled in September. It would also see the creation of a new city quarter with restaurants and bars.

The 10,000 capacity outdoor performance space would include a floating platform in the river, while conference and exhibition space could increase by more than a third.

Dom McKay, chief executive of the SEC, said the UK Government funding would go towards phase one of the project, which will focus on the redevelopment of the car park situated in front of the OVO Hydro.

He said: “This is extremely welcome news and a further endorsement from the UK Government of the vital role the SEC plays in underpinning Glasgow’s and Scotland’s position as a global events and conference destination. Today, the SEC generates more than £605m in economic value, welcomes 2.5 million visitors annually and supports 5,300 jobs.

“This welcome support along with our wider Campus development plans will allow us to not only significantly enhance our economic and social contribution but also secure the SEC’s and Scotland’s position as a leading international venue for live entertainment, conferences, and exhibitions for decades to come.

“The UK Government’s £6 million funding will help deliver the first phase of our plans to develop our Campus for the next generation.”

Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander said: “Glasgow built the stage for COP26 and the Commonwealth Games, and this investment will help build the next one.

“By backing the SEC’s ambitious expansion plans with a £6 million commitment, the UK Government is helping to boost Scotland’s economy, create jobs, show the world Scotland means business, and ensure Glasgow remains a leading global events city.”

Plans for the site also feature a new crossing over the Clydeside Expressway, improvements to parking facilities, and the redevelopment of Exhibition Centre railway station.
