It was Pastry Week during episode six of Bake Off, which saw one bubbly baker exit the tent.

From “plump little pies” to a Polish technical challenge, the bakers were up against it during Pastry Week in The Great British Bake Off tent.

Whittled down to just seven contestants from the start of series 17, there were quite a few references to soggy bottoms - in true Bake Off fashion - as those remaining tried to impress the judges with flaky, delicious pastry.

The bakers were tasked with making eight hand-held savoury pies in the signature, with Nigella Lawson issuing a tricky - and largely unknown - technical challenge. She requested a Polish Karpatka, a choux-based dessert with a unique custard centre.

During the showstopper challenge last night (Tuesday, October 27), the bakers had to make one large pie - but only freeform. No tins were allowed, and each pie had to be shaped by hand.

There were some triumphs in the tent - and a Hollywood Handshake awarded - but not every baker was able to stay consistent.

Here’s who left the Bake Off during Pastry Week - as well as who came out on top.

Who won Star Baker? Episode 6 winner

Tom won Star Baker during Bake Off’s Pastry Week.

It is the third time the baker has won the title since the beginning of the series, with his previous victories during Biscuit Week and Bread Week.

The 25-year-old hairdresser served up a Vietnamese banh mi-inspired pastry in the signature, which both Lawson and Paul Hollywood praised for its flavours and flaky pastry, ending up as the runner up during the technical challenge behind Moyin.

Tom’s showstopper then really lived up to the challenge name, with Hollywood actually walking out from behind the gingham table to shake his hand after taking a bite of his Mexican-inspired chicken and chorizo pie. Shaped in what the show called a “stop-motion chicken”, Tom created a Chicken Run character in the form of pie.

Unfortunately, Clara was sent home during Pastry Week.

The Portuguese baker struggled with her “drunken deer” venison and stout hand-held pie shape in the signature. During the technical, she wasn’t able to overcome the Carpathian-mountain shaped hurdle of the Karpatka, with her choux pastry more resembling an omelette, in her own words. The judges did praise her custard, but it didn’t stop her from coming dead last.

Onto the showstopper, a sun and moon shaped apple and pecan pie, and Clara’s shortcrust pastry was too short for Hollywood’s liking. It opened up and started to leak in the oven, with cracks appearing on the surface.

It was sufficiently flaky and attractive, but overall not enough to save her. Clara knew her time was up, however, and was unsurprised when a visibly emotional Noel Fielding announced her name.

Lawson described the baker as “so talented”, but a poor week can ruin anyone’s chances of winning the show.

That being said, Clara didn’t leave before winning Star Baker. She impressed the judges during Audience Choice Week and was able to exit the tent with that achievement under her belt.
